We started spreading the word ‘Revel’ earlier in June and with just over 3 weeks to go, the excitement is starting to mount for a gala at GOMA that compares with nothing else the Gallery has ever seen, presented by the QAGOMA Future Collective, a group of our newest and youngest supporters.

Last year, the Future Collective helped the Gallery acquire emerging Australian artist Abdul Abdullah’s enthralling ‘Coming to terms’ series 2015, which featured in APT8. This year, Revel 2016, an all-new Future Collective initiative, is set to offer an exclusive after-hours extravaganza within the Gallery.

What does this mean?
Under the guidance of Future Collective members, Revel 2016 brings a lot of promise to a simple premise in five key ways throughout the night.

ART

Guests enjoy full access to the three exhibitions that currently spread across GOMA’s ground floor. The ticketed international touring exhibition ‘Cindy Sherman’ charts the artist’s return as the central model in her artworks and includes an entirely new body of work on display for the first time outside New York. The unforgettable ‘A World View: The Tim Fairfax Gift’ brings movement into focus in a suite of contemporary international artworks from the Collection, all acquired with the support of a single generous benefactor. Last but certainly not least, ‘Ah Xian: Naturephysica’ coaxes out the inner child with interactive projections that explore belonging in an all-new collaborative project with celebrated Chinese-born Australian artist Ah Xian

MUSIC

Future-pop musician and visual artist Michelle Xen + The Neon Wild brings her saturated synths, heavy bass future electronica and performative edge onto centre stage in GOMA’s River Room. Xen’s creativity had her working in video installation, sound and performance under the Gallery’s Melville Haysom Memorial Art Scholarship in 2004, and more recently in the studio with producers such as Wally De Backer (Gotye), Quan Yeomans (Regurgitator) and Scott Horscroft (EMI). This year we see her back in the Gallery, bigger and better than ever.

CREATIVITY

BLOG-
Rachel Burke

While looking at fantastic contemporary art is always a thrill, we’re getting hands-on with Rachel Burke of ‘i make. you wear it’ blogging fame. Burke has been bringing some serious colour to crafting online since 2012 and this July is set to help revellers take their accessories to new heights of DIY originality

GASTRONOMY

Who could forget an outstanding menu to complement the full itinerary of Revel 2016. QAGOMA’s Executive Chef Josue Lopez has been attracting the attention of critics for years now, recently steering the GOMA Restaurant to a two-hat rating and sweeping up the honour of Chef of the Year in the Brisbane Times Good Food Guide 2016. Lopez plans some unique twists for this one night only, including a special cocktail on arrival and a selection of locally-sourced and inspired culinary delights.

This last aspect is central to Revel 2016 – your attendance supports the QAGOMA Foundation, the Gallery’s vital fundraising body. If you’ve ever wanted to feel more connected with your Gallery, visual art and others who feel similarly inclined, Revel 2016 gives you a taste of how you can experience all of these things in one unforgettable evening. And, of course, if it leaves you hungry for a bigger bite, members of the Future Collective will be there to let you know what you can expect if you’d like to take your involvement, knowledge and commitment to QAGOMA to the next level.
