Blandford Fletcher, England 1858-1936 / Evicted 1887 / Oil on canvas / Purchased 1896 / Collection: Queensland Art Gallery

This week, we said goodbye to a major artistic figure of Queensland origin. Betty Churcher will be remembered as one of the most passionate and transformative figures of the art museum world. Not just a highly successful director of the National Gallery of Australia, she was an artist in her own right, an engaging writer and a broadcaster. She will be sadly missed.

She wanted everyone else to experience art in the same way she first did as a seven-year-old during a visit to the Queensland Art Gallery, it was there she found her first love: Blandford Fletcher’s painting Evicted 1887 which is currently on display in ‘The Founding Years 1895–1915: A Collection for Queensland’.

Churcher was at the Gallery last April for the launch of her publication Australian Notebooks — a delightful and enlightening personal tour of her most beloved artworks in Australian galleries, including highlights from the QAGOMA Collection
