Designed to promote, encourage and advance the development of visual arts in Queensland, the Melville Haysom Memorial Art Scholarship is offered to artists and art students aged 25 years or under. We introduce the 2012 scholarship recipients, ‘Catherine or Kate’, a Brisbane-based duo comprised of artists Catherine Sagin and Kate Woodcroft. Their project, ‘Mazda 121 Residency’, will get underway at the end of November and ‘Catherine or Kate’ will be updating us with their progress, so stay tuned…
We’re Catherine or Kate — an artist duo from Brisbane. From 25 November — 1 December we’ll be living out of our Mazda 121.
For seven days we will traverse Brisbane, concentrating our journey on transit zones four and outer. Zone four is 6.5km from the city centre and, as we live within the restricted area, we can’t go back to our homes during the residency period. This project, which we have called Mazda 121 Residency, extends on our interest in the car as a site for making and hosting work.
We are interested in the ubiquity of the driving experience, the social dynamics created by the car’s architecture, and also the possibilities for unearthing new perspectives on local contexts through exploring our own city in this way.
We’re excited to have other Brisbane-based artist pairs Erika Scott & Archie Moore and Tim Kerr & Daniel McKewen on board, undertaking their own car-based residencies as part of the project:
Throughout the residency, we will each be maintaining daily accounts of our journey via the project website www.mazda121residency.com. This website will exist as a unique library of artist accounts of outer Brisbane and include profiles of the artists and their cars.
The residency will culminate in a homecoming event on Saturday 1 December. Stay tuned for details on the project website.
If you’ve got suggestions for places or activities in outer Brisbane, shoot us an email at email@example.com.
This project is supported by the QAGGOMA Melville Haysom Memorial Art Scholarship.
